Sustainable Drainage for Schools

Helping to alleviate surface water flooding in three Torbay schools with 23,000 litres of added attenuation capacity.

Around 40 bathtubs of water, every time it rains heavily!

This rainwater management project was designed to help:

  • Alleviate pressure on the drainage network
  • Tackle surface water flooding
  • Reduce sewer overflows
  • Overcome site-specific challenges.

As well as inspiring hundreds of young people in the process!

Department for Education match funding opens later this year. Find out how we could help your school.

What did we achieve?

Working closely with Torbay Communities, Torbay Council and each school to coordinate the project, we:

  • Installed 33 devices across the three schools
  • Provided 7,663 litres of attenuation capacity per site
  • Increased biodiversity and amenity

Devices are fitted with real-time monitoring to provide essential validation and understanding over the next two years. Data will be turned into insights by our platform and expert team for real-world insights and will be available to schools as a learning resource.

The challenges we faced

Setting up sustainable drainage in schools provides a specific set of challenges. From which solution will work best to the logistics and installation.

Each site had different requirements; we had to consider:

  • Device performance
  • Space constraints
  • Practical considerations

The Process

Rainwater Tank Selection, Ordering, Delivery, Installation.

Made possible by our proprietary modelling and digital roof area assessment, we determined the optimal rainwater capture potential for each school site and assed what level of protection for severe rainfall our interventions can provide.

Based on this and the Department for Education's guidance, we recommended 3 products for each school. Providing a combined 7,663 litres of added attenuation capacity per site, all whilst working towards site specific goals and challenges.

Ensuring Project Compliance

These types of projects often come with lots of admin, compliance, and reporting.

Luckily, we're here to ensure this goes as smoothly as possible with our seamless process that provides:

  • Afforded level protection document
  • DBS checks
  • Employers' liability insurance
  • Public Liability and Professional Indemnity
  • Risk Assessments and Method Statements
  • Safety and Maintenance Guide

Collaboration at the Core

We partnered with Torbay Communities and Torbay Council to bring a SuDS for Schools project to life at three schools in Torbay. Part funded by the Department for Education, these projects are essential to reducing pressure on drainage networks and inspire the next generation of rainwater champions.
