Inspiring the Next Generation of Rainwater Champions

Bringing SuDS to life in schools through hands-on installations, engaging education, and real-time data - empowering young people while helping partners meet water, climate, and regulatory goals.

What is SuDS for Schools?

SuDs in Schools is a Department for Education (DfE) initiative and part of the Schools Water Strategy which aims to reduce surface water risk on school sites throughout the nation. This practical, placed-based approach helps alleviate flood risk whilst wrapping in essential water education, engaging students with climate-resilience solutions.

Aligned with national SuDS standards and the Cunliffe Report, the initiative supports surface water management, builds flood resilience, and strengthens environmental awareness through real-world learning. The DfE can grant fund up to 50% of project costs and applications for 2025/2026 are now open. You can find out more here.

Why is SuDS in Schools important?

We believe the next generation plays a vital role in protecting our most precious resource - water.

By installing real-world SuDS features like rainwater harvesting tanks and linking them to school learning through real-time monitoring, we create opportunities to:

  • Build awareness of climate resilience.
  • Encourage sustainable behaviours from a young age.
  • Improve surface water management across communities.
  • Meet the aims of water, education, and climate strategies.

Who can get involved?

We work with a wide range of organisations who want to make a difference:

Local Councils

Lead Local Flood Authorities

Water companies

Schools

FCRIP projects

Rivers Trusts and catchment partnerships

Testimonial:

"It was brilliant working with Nick and the students on the project. Nick really engaged with the variety of students using differing techniques to support them and get the best from each one. The student took part willingly in all activities and really had fun with the practical elements. Students in the second group enjoyed finding out facts about the local area and how the landscape has changed.

Nick worked with students one to one when it was needed, this was predominantly when the students were designing water butts. Helping students to foster their ideas and get them on paper."
