Find out how you can share your opinion, easily save water and slow the flow below.
With climate change causing periods of more extreme weather, we are feeling the effects of heavier downpours causing surface water flooding, and prolonged drier periods causing droughts and water stress. These heavier downpours also contribute to overwhelmed wastewater drainage systems, which when overwhelmed, spill into our natural watercourses to protect our homes. These spills have devastating impacts on our wildlife and on our own health, but we can do something about this.
Capturing the water that falls on impermeable surfaces such as your roof, into water butts and slowing the flow into the drainage system eases pressure on these systems which leads to a reduction in sewer spill incidences. It also reduces reliance on treated mains water as a water source for your garden, cushioning against the impacts of droughts.
You might not be able to take part in a project at the moment, but there are still ways you can get involved.
Instead of running the tap cold every time you want a drink. Run it into a bottle and then store it in the fridge. You'll have ice cold water and wont waste a drop.
Check for a leaky loo - You could place a piece of toilet paper at the back of your bowl. Leave it a few hours and if it's soaked then it's likely your loo is leaking.
Time watering your garden and plants for efficiency, early morning and late evening is best. This will mean that less water is lost to evaporation in the midday sun and therefore less water is needed to satiate your thirsty garden.
